Abstract Aims According to cardiovascular outcome trials, some sodium‐glucose contransporter‐2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonists (GLP‐1RA) are recommended for secondary cardiovascular prevention in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Aim: To evaluate the changes in renal endpoints in type 2 diabetes patients treated with dapagliflozin versus other glucose-lowering medications in routine clinical practice. Materials and Methods: DARWIN-T2D was a retrospective study conducted at 46 outpatient diabetes clinics in Italy. An automated software collected data on 17 285 patients who received dapagliflozin, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, or gliclazide, 6751 of whom had a follow-up visit. Abstract Background For patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the single most common cause of mortality. In 2008 and 2012, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) respectively mandated cardiovascular outcomes trials (CVOTs) on all new anti-diabetic agents, as prospective trials statistically powered to rule out excess cardiovascular risk in patients with T2D.
